In a follow-up to a story reported earlier in the eNews, the European Parliament has indeed adopted the report drafted by Frédérique Ries of Belgium entitled Avoiding the Potential Risks of Electromagnetic Fields. The report was adopted with 559 votes in favor, 22 against, and 8 abstentions. The adopted report calls for better protection of EU citizens though the “optimal placement of devices.” Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) called on mobile phone operators to negotiate shared infrastructure to reduce the “exposure of the public to EMFs.” They also called for maps showing the exposure to EMFs in various geographic areas, the preparation of an annual report on “the level of electromagnetic radiation in the EU,” and improved consumer information by amending the technical standards of the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardisation. Proposed labeling requirements would show the transmitting power of every wireless-operated device.
