As I indicated in the previous post, this discussion begins examining signal characteristics from an electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) perspective. But first, a few words to describe EMC. This is a relationship issue. We want all the equipment items to get along in peace and in harmony, but if one of them is a big source and the other is a wimpy receiver, they may not play … [Read more...]
Impact of the Upcoming Medical RF Immunity Revision
As indicated last time, there are two key parties with a vested interest in the outcome of the upcoming Medical RF immunity revision:The test house manager who has to justify an upgrade to his test system to the people holding the purse strings. His customer, the company wishing to sell medical equipment compliant with the revised standard.I shall add a third … [Read more...]
Are they out to get us?
I didn’t realize when I addressed the smart meter RF situation that it was turning into such an uproar. Now, on top of the RADHAZ comments, people are expressing concern about protection of privacy. It seems that a lot of people have a difficult time believing in RF hazards because they can’t smell, feel, touch, taste, etc. the lower RF energy levels and, therefore, a hazard … [Read more...]
Just when you thought it was safe to turn off the light…
Well, I’ve used my quota of words for the month of May so now I’m going to have to make the next several posts somewhat shorter. That’s what happens when you get on a really passionate topic. The last post was about smart electric meters and the un-smart way in which the power companies have tried to make their case. We all know that it falls under the heading of WIIFM . . . … [Read more...]
Protecting the Earth’s Limited Resources
May marks the dawn of a new blog created by Interference Technology with emphasis on Electromagnetic Compatibility. I am honored to have been asked to serve as the blogger in this newest venture to reach out to members of the community. I have written many articles over the years and have always strived to make them purely technical, easily readable, and non commercial. This … [Read more...]
IEEE EMC Society Offers University Grant
The Electromagnetic Compatibility Society (EMCS) of the IEEE annually searches for a University or College to assist in adding EMC to their curriculum. We are looking for a University or College that does not now include EMC in their offering, but that has an interest in doing so. The objective of this program is to expose the maximum number of students to the study of the … [Read more...]
System Uses EM Waves to Deliver Wireless Power through the Air
At the recent TED Global Conference in Oxford, UK, a US-based technology firm, WiTricity, demonstrated a system that delivers electricity through the air to power laptops, cell phones, and other electrical devices. This new system is based on the work of Professor Marin Soljacic, a physicist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The concept of sending power wirelessly … [Read more...]
Passing of Gabriel Sanchez
Gabriel Sanchez, of Advanced ElectroMagnetics, Inc. (AEMI), long active in the EMC community, died on Thursday, July 2, 2009. A pioneer in the field of EMC, he was a graduate of Cal Poly Pomona and had worked at Rantec. He cofounded AEMI in 1979 and grew that company until it was acquired by Orbit in 1997. Gabe stayed on at AEMI, which continued doing business under the AEMI … [Read more...]
Towards an EMC Technology Roadmap
A technology roadmap is a tool for attaining the optimum development within a sector of technology. Marcel van Doorn Philips Electromagnetics & Cooling Competence Center, Eindhoven, the Netherlands INTRODUCTION This article expands earlier work on the concept of a technology roadmap for EMC technology.1 Just as a traditional terrestrial map helps insure that travelers … [Read more...]
Reverberation Chamber for EMC Testing
The reverberation chamber provides the most realistic simulation/equivalency for electronics functioning within a cavity. Er-Ping Li and Xing-Chang Wei Electromagnetic Labs, Institute of High Performance Computing, Singapore INTRODUCTION The problem is familiar, but growing. The widespread and ever-growing use of electronic devices with high-speed components increases the … [Read more...]
