A new directive on the minimum health and safety requirements for the exposure of workers to electromagnetic fields has been approved by the European Union member state’s permanent representatives, the Council of the European Union has announced. The draft directive will need to be formally approved by the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union before coming into force.
The new directive will replace a 2004 directive that was never enacted due to problems with its implementation. A number of changes have been made to the new directive, including the review of exposure limitations with respect to new scientific evidence and the addition of rules for possible deviations, including medical applications using magnetic resonance imaging.
