A telecommunications company serving metropolitan areas of the Philippines has uncovered the cause of poor cellular reception in major sections of Makati.
Globe Telecom Inc. said last week that the radio frequency identification (RFID) systems installed as security measures in some upscale residential villages along a stretch of Edsa from Guadalupe to Magallanes were identified as the cause of the interference. An interference scanning test conducted by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) revealed that the RFID systems, which were installed to monitor vehicles entering and leaving village premises, operate using frequencies outside of NTC-approved frequencies for RFID systems.
The interference from the RFID security systems is in addition to interference from illegal repeaters installed in Metro Manila identified earlier in the investigation.
“It is unfortunate that a RFID system aimed at providing security in certain villages has been the cause of a major source of signal interference in the area. We would like to assure our subscribers that the company is doing everything within its reach to resolve the issue,” Atty. Froilan Castelo, Globe head of Corporate Legal Services Division, said.
Globe Telecom is reportedly cooperating with the NTC representatives from the homeowners’ associations in the affected villages to resolve the issue.
