A new thermal sensor that could save tens of millions of dollars in wasted fuel each year has received a UK government grant to advance its use in gas turbines. The technology is significant because, whereas existing thermocouple temperature sensors are susceptible to EMI within turbo machinery and are adequate for lab research but lack durability for use in an operational environment, the new sensor is based on optical technology and is immune to EMI.
