The Ottawa Sun reports that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police have warned every police agency in Canada about cell phone jammers after two officers attempting to arrest two suspects on a darkened highway shoulder found themselves with dead radios. Hand-held jammers that override radio signals are readily available on the Internet although illegal in both Canada and the United States. A spokesman for the Mounties pointed out that, in the wrong hands, jammers can cause a serious threat to officer safety. They are also a threat to public safety because the digital radios used by police and fire companies can be cut off by them. In the U.S., the Federal Communications Commission will fine first-time offenders up to $11,000. Read more at the Ottawa Sun website.
