Hong Kong Will Release More SpectrumOfta, the telecom regulator for Hong Kong, has announced plans to sell off more radio spectrum to wireless telecom providers. Ofta will auction separate lots of 4.8 Hz in the 1800-MHz band. For the purposes of the sale, the spectrum will be divided into six blocks. Winning bidders will have the right to use the airwaves until 2021 when many of the current licenses expire. The bidders will be required to pay an upfront fee as well as an annual amount for using their spectrum license. Auction documents will not be available until early next year, and actual bidding itself is not expected to take place until the second quarter of 2009. The official announcement can be viewed on the Ofta website in multi-page PDF form. Everyday brings more news about the burgeoning wireless telecom market.
