According to the Institute of Physics (IOP) further pressure has been applied to the European Commission to amend the Physical Agents Directive, which would, if adopted into national legislation, drastically curtail the use of MRI scanners in hospitals and research centers across Europe. Both the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) and the European Parliament have backed calls to change the course of the legislation. The ICNIRP has published new less restrictive legislation while the European Parliament has called for exempting MRI scanners from the proposed legislation. The legislation originally proposed in 2004 was scheduled to become law in 2008, but the effective date is now 2012.
