Frequency Interference Suspected After Drones Fail at South Korean Defense Demo

Frequency interference is being investigated as a possible factor after six of 17 drone demonstrations failed during South Korea’s 2026 Defense Drone Technology Exhibition.

According to reporting by Lee Hyun-ho for Seoul Economic Daily, all 17 demonstrations had succeeded during rehearsal the previous day. Military officials reportedly suspect that increased RF activity associated with crowds at the event may have contributed to the failures.

The report highlights a broader challenge for small drones operating in the commonly used 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz bands, which are also shared by Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and other wireless devices. For military and commercial UAS developers alike, the incident underscores the importance of designing communications and control systems for increasingly congested electromagnetic environments.
