A Fisker Karma seemingly set itself on fire Aug. 10 in Woodside, Calif., as its owner went into a grocery store. The company has investigated and says the six-figure plug-in hybrid’s advanced powertrain, nor the battery or engine, was the problem.
“Evidence revealed thus far supports the fact that the ignition source was not the Lithium-ion battery pack, new technology components or unique exhaust routing. The area of origin for the fire was determined to be outside the engine compartment,” a statement said.
The exact cause of the fire is still undetermined. Fisker has hired independent Pacific Rim Investigative Group with the preliminary examination of the vehicle in Anaheim Calif. Two Karma recalls were issued in past year to fix a potential battery defect and to replace a coolant clamp position. There were no fires involved with these defects.
Fisker Senior Communications Director Roger Ormisher said the team is working to rule out major technologies inside the vehicle.
Check back for updates; as Fisker said they will announce the cause of the fire after the investigation is complete.
