As this edition of the eNews is being prepared, the European Parliament is slated to hear an address urging precautionary measures regarding exposure to man-made electromagnetic fields and their impact on human health. Belgian Liberal Member Frédérique Ries is scheduled to address the full European Parliament and to deliver her report on mobile phone safety. Reportedly, Ms. Ries will reference what she terms “the cocktail of electromagnetic fields” produced not only by mobile phones but by WiFi networks, phone masts, power lines, and GPS receivers as well. Further, she advocates that certain steps be taken before the full weight of science can weigh in on the matter. Specifically, they include an EU limit of three volts per meter, the location of antennas and phone masts at a specific distance from schools and hospitals, and public, online availability showing points of exposure to high-voltage power lines, radio frequencies, and microwaves.Find the original announcement on the European Parliament website.
