Defense contractor Raytheon has announced that it has completed performance testing of its infrared missile warning sensor that can monitor an entire hemisphere from a single telescope. The test program completed at Raytheon’s space manufacturing facility in El Segundo, CA included electromagnetic interference, vibration, and thermal vacuum testing. The sensor encompasses Raytheon’s large-format, local plane arrays and will be able to track dimmer objects as compared to sensors now in use. The sensor is the central feature of the Third Generation Infrared System, sponsored by the U.S. Air Force Space and Missiles Systems Center and managed by the Air Force Research Laboratory Space Vehicles Directorate in Albuquerque, NM. The company hopes to deliver the sensor to the government in less than 24 months.Find the original announcement on the Raytheon website.
