An internationally known epidemiologist is investigating a so-called cancer cluster associated with the Literature Building on the campus of UC San Diego. Campus protesters have asserted that nine women who worked in that building were diagnosed with breast cancer over a seventeen-year period. Despite a preliminary study that cast doubt on any link between exposure to electromagnetic fields and the cancer cases, suspicion has focused on the fields produced by the building’s elevators. A statement issued by the University’s Environment, Health, and Safety Office indicated that Chancellor Marye Anne Fox has asked for an aggressive investigation into the matter and that Dr. Leeka Kheifets, an expert who, for several years, led the World Health Organization’s International EMF Project, began an investigation on February 10. In the interim, the elevator has been shut down and the near by offices have been vacated. The investigation is expected to last six to eight weeks. See the official university announcement online.
