Fractal Antenna Systems, Inc. has been awarded the world’s first invisibility cloak patent, marking a milestone in innovation and bringing science fiction a little closer to reality.
According to the patent, invisibility is achieved by using a large amount of fractals—shapes made from repeating geometric figures—to surround the object and divert electromagnetic waves around to the other side. In March 2009, Fractal publicly demonstrated the clean disappearance of a cell phone at microwaves over a wide frequency range, a contrast to earlier efforts from other companies that produced narrow frequency coverage, shadowing, attenuation and poor fidelity.
Fractal plans to start commercial production and distribution of its invisibility cloak to improve coverage in blind spots for microwave telecommunications and remove antenna shadows.
