A special event honoring those who served on the historic World War II aircraft the Mosquito will take place at the de Havilland Aircraft Heritage Centre in Hertfordshire, UK on Sunday, October 4, 2009. Crew members will meet visitors and will provide autographs beside the Mosquito in the main hangar. The Mosquito earned a unique place in aviation history with its wooden construction that achieved degrees of speed and maneuverability that left the heavier metal aircraft of its day far behind. Interestingly enough, the Mosquito was built as a private project despite the objections of the War Ministry. Still at the height of hostilities, there was a constant demand for the speedy and efficient Mosquito. And to prove that it truly is a small world, Gen. Henry “Hap” Arnold, the American general who was one of the first advocates of the Mosquito was born and raised a few miles from the current offices of ITEM Publications—just down the road in Gladwyne, PA.
