The U.S. Navy is currently developing a new stealth warship that will be “virtually undetectable” and equipped with electromagnetic “railguns” capable of firing projectiles at several times the speed of sound.
“With its stealth, incredibly capable sonar system, strike capability and lower manning requirements—this is our future,” Admiral Jonathan Greenert, chief of naval operations, said.
The DDG-1000 destroyer warship will be equipped with a “wave-piercing hull that leaves almost no wake, electric drive propulsion and advanced sonar and missiles.” While plans for the ship reveal that the new design will be longer and heavier than existing destroyers, the number of crew required for the ship will be smaller due to the extensive automated systems.
The DDG-1000 destroyer warships are scheduled to be made active starting in 2014.
