The U.S. NAVY is researching a device that will convert wave motion to electricity to power emergency equipment in life rafts.
The “Lifesaver”, a ring-shaped buoy, is being tested to obtain operational data on this particular ocean renewable energy conversion technology. The buoy converts energy generated by passing waves into electrical energy.
The Lifesaver project was initially tested off the south coast of England for 19 months. Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Engineering and Expeditionary Warfare Center is managing the project, and after some modifications based on the previous testing, will continue the testing at the Navy’s Wave Energy Test Site, March 22-25, off Marine Corps Base, Hawaii.
