Starbucks has partnered with Duracell to initiate a wireless charging trial period in 17 Boston-area locations.
According to Starbucks chief digital officer Adam Brotman, the company is installing Duracell’s Powermat technology into tabletops “to get a sense for how our customers will react.”
Duracell’s technology utilizes an electromagnetic field to transfer energy between two objects—a process known as inductive charging. Many cell phones require an accessory to use the technology; Starbucks will loan accessories to customers that do not own the needed equipment.
Starbucks plans to continue the wireless charging trial period until the end of the holiday season and hopes the new installations will draw more customers into the stores for longer periods of time.
