Semiconductor manufacturer Marvell Technology has been ordered to pay $1.2 billion to Carnegie Mellon University after being found guilty of patent infringement.
The lawsuit filed against the Marvell Technology by the university alleged that the company violated patents related to processes for filtering out interference in hard-disk drive circuits that extrapolate data from high-speed magnetic disks. The removal of interference allows for data to be read faster and more accurately.
The jury determined that Marvell Technology violated two of the alleged nine patents named in the lawsuit. The verdict was announced in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania in Pittsburgh.
