Researchers at Tel Aviv University and the Rabin Medical Center in Israel have reported preliminary findings of a possible connection between cell phone radiation and the recent increase in thyroid cancer cases in Western countries. The research was conducted at Belinson Hospital in Petah Tikva and at the Felsenstein Medical Research Center, part of the Sackler Faculty of Medicine at Tel Aviv University.
During the experiments, researchers subjected human thyroid cells to radiation designed to simulate the electromagnetic radiation emitted by cell phones and determined that “the irradiated thyroid cells proliferated at a much higher, statistically significant rate” than the non-irradiated thyroid cells in the control group.
However, the research remains in the early stages and no final conclusion has been developed.
“The findings are the first evidence of changes in thyroid cells in response to electromagnetic radiation,” Prof. Raphael Feinmesser, lead researcher and head of Belinson Hospital’s ear, nose and throat department, said. “But drawing sweeping conclusions as to a connection between cellphone radiation and thyroid cancer is still far off.”
