Both the EMR Policy Institute and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) have filed formal protests with the Federal Communications Commission opposing the Alltel / Verizon Wireless merger. The basis for the Petition to Deny is that the FCC has failed to address the issue of the long term exposure to RF radiation on human health. The complaints allege an unsatisfactory double standard. A stipulation inherent in receiving a license is that wireless telecoms must instruct workers directly responsible for wireless installations to be aware and alert vis-à-vis RF exposure. In contrast, third party workers including firefighters, electricians, roofers, painters, window washers, and others often apply their professional skills in areas where they are in direct line of a powerful RF emitter. The organizations want any merger delayed until Verizon implements a safety solution that would protect both categories of workers. The petition of both the IBEWcan be viewed online.
Ultimately, the FCC will make a decision, but in the meantime why not weigh in on this controversy. Just visit the InterferenceTechnology website and go to the NEBS/Telecom Forum.
