Researchers from the University of Oslo (UiO), Norway have developed instruments for inclusion on satellites that will be launched to investigate why the solar winds that produce the northern lights interfere with radio communications, GPS navigation and satellite transmissions.
Universities around the world will cooperate to launch 50 satellites in 2013 to examine all layers of the ionosphere. 20 of the satellites will focus on altitudes between 320 and 160 km, and will contain the UiO instruments, said research fellow Tore André Bekkeng of the STAR Project at UiO.
