The latest IEEE 802.11 standard is now available, covering wireless LANs in vehicular environments. The standard is IEEE 802.11p™, “IEEE Standard for Information Technology — Telecommunications and information exchange between systems — Local and metropolitan area networks — Specific requirements—Part 11: Wireless LAN Medium Access Control (MAC) and Physical Layer (PHY) specifications—Amendment 6: Wireless Access in Vehicular Environments.”
IEEE 802.11p is the groundwork for Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC), a U.S. Department of Transportation project looking at vehicle-based communication networks, particularly for applications such as toll collection, vehicle safety services, and commerce transactions.Read more from the IEEE.
