Test and measurement equipment company Tektronix has released the MDO4000 Series, a mixed domain oscilloscope (MDO) for use with EMI emission testing. A MDO is a relatively new test option that combines the functionality of an oscilloscope and a spectrum analyzer into one instrument.
According to industry expert William Kimmel of Kimmel Gerke Associates, though spectrum analyzers are important for EMI emission testing, the data collected is not ideal for diagnosing the causes of emission problems. He adds that the combination of a time domain and a frequency domain in one instrument such as the Tektronix MDO4000 provides data on “the cause and effect relationships between EMI problems in both the frequency domain and the time domain” and enables the engineer to more effectively diagnose the causes of emission problems.
The MDO4000 Series also offers advanced RF triggering, power analysis, limit and mask testing and HDTV and custom video analysis.
