CEO of Harbinger Capital Partners, a private investment firm that owns LightSquared, a wireless broadband carrier, made a pitch to the FCC to approve commercial services. If approved, the company could put out 40,000 cell towers over the country.
The FCC gave LightSquared a conditional waiver in late January of last year, telling them they needed to fix the interference problems with GPS receivers, since they operate at adjacent frequencies. The company failed the first test, since their transmitters “knocked out GPS receivers operating anywhere from 600 feet to 185 miles” near their transmitters. Other organizations have reported interference from LightSquared’s transmitters as well, including the Defense and Transportation departments and the Federal Aviation Administration.
The CEO, Philip Falcone, “urged the commission to continue to work toward a resolution that would enable the commencement of commercial service over the LightSquared network,” while also emphasizing their sizable $3 billion investment.
