Scientists at the University of Warwick, England are exploring the use of optical wireless in private vehicles. Currently used in aviation, optical wireless may soon be used to in cars to communicate between parts of a car’s engine compartment, eliminating the need for copper wiring.
Implementing LED-wireless optical networks in vehicles would significantly reduce the weight of components under the hood, saving on fuel and providing passengers with unlimited spectrum for computer devices. Use of optical wireless technology will also eliminate electromagnetic interference, and manufacturing and maintenance costs will be reduced due to inexpensive cost of LED and infrared light sources.
