Kermit Owen Phipps of Harriman, Tenn., died April 1, 2013 in Knoxville, Tenn. The director of EMC Services at AMS was 47.
Born in Kingsport, Phipps was resident of Harriman for the past 10 years. After serving in the U. S. Air Force for approximately three years, he spent nearly 20 years as an electrical engineer with EPRI, Inc. For the past two years, he was director of EMC at AMS Corp. He was a senior member of the IEEE.
Phipps was prececeased by his mother, Elva Skelton Phipps and his brother, Hal Phipps. He is survived by his wife, Cathy Britton; son, Johnathan Phipps; his father, Edsel Phipps; step-daughters, Allison Sands, Brooke Cox and husband Brian; granddaughters, Hannah, Grace, Carley and Avery; several aunts, uncles and two nephews and many cousins; special friends, John Harding, William Webb and Mike Morrison.
The family received friends Thursday, April 4, 2013 at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, Church Hill, Tenn. A funeral service followed in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Jessie Hartgrove and Pastor Ed Maynard officiating. A military graveside service was held Friday, April 5 at Hawkins County Memorial Gardens with the Hawkins County Color Guard and the Tenn. National Guard conducting the rites.
Interference Technology President, Graham Kilshaw, offered these words, “Kermit has been a major contributor to Interference Technology for as long as I can remember. I think the first article he produced for our readers was back in the late 1990s, and he wrote some of our best material every year since. He was a wonderful man, we all will miss him here, and our condolences go out to Kermit’s family.”
