The Central Japan Railway Company (JR Tokai) has unveiled plans for a commercial passenger train that could reach speeds of up to 310 miles per hour (mph) using magnetic levitation. According to the Japan Daily Press, the train will be operational by 2027 and will connect central Tokyo’s Shinagawa Station to Nagoya, with plans for an extension to Osaka by 2045.
The 16-carriage “maglev” train will be able to hold up to 1,000 passengers, according to the prototype plans. The first car of the train will measure approximately 92 feet long, with 49 feet devoted to an aerodynamic nose.
In order to ensure a quiet and smoother riding experience at high speeds, the train will forgo the traditional use of wheels and instead employ the use of electromagnetic fields to “float” over and be pulled along the tracks.
