Google has filed an application with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) seeking permission to build a wireless network at its headquarters in Mountain View, Calif. and requesting the use of frequencies 2524-2546 MHz and 2567-2625 MHz currently owned by Clearwire for testing purposes. “Confidential treatment” was requested by Google as part of the application.
“The only reason to use these frequencies is if you have business designs on some mobile service,” wireless engineer Steven Crowley said. Crowley was reportedly the first person to discover Google’s application online.
According to a small description that accompanied the experimental license application, “Google plans to test up to 50 base stations and 200 user devices during the requested experimental license term.”
The description adds that both indoor and outdoor base stations will be utilized in the experiment, with a radius of approximately 100 to 200 meters and 500 to 1,000 meters, respectively. Both directional and non-directional antennas will be used as part of the experiment.
