A Federal Aviation Administration advisory panel investigating whether or not to relax the rules surrounding personal electronic device use on airplanes is expected to wrap up their inquiry next week, The New York Times reported in a recent article.
Citing information from several members of the panel who requested anonymity, The New York Times said that the new guidelines are expected to allow passengers to read e-books, listen to music and podcasts, and watch videos during takeoff and landing. Sending and receiving emails and text messages or using Wi-Fi during takeoff and landing will remain prohibited; making phone calls throughout the duration of the flight will also be banned.
The panel is expected to present its recommendations to the FAA by the end of next month, while new policies will most likely go into effect sometime next year.
