President Barack Obama made it official on Tuesday, March 3 and announced that his one-time undergraduate and law school friend Julius Genachowski has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission. In addition to being a graduate of Columbia University and Harvard Law, Genachowski was more recently the author of Obama’s technology and innovation plan during last year’s presidential campaign.Widely hailed as a telecom insider with expertise in both the private and public sectors, Genachowski still faces a number of challenges. The nation is still undergoing the long awaited digital television transition. The challenge of bringing broadband access to millions in underserved and often poor rural areas has yet to be solved, and the almost decade old struggle to create a national emergency network for first responders remains problematic. Washington pundits are said to expect his confirmation. For further details on the new appointee, visit the online White House Press Office.
