The U.S. Navy has granted a contract to embedded computing technology supplier Kontron America Inc. to provide 25 FS-1290 rugged VME chassis assemblies for embedded computing in AN/UPX-29A interrogator systems aboard the littoral combat ships USS Little Rock and USS Sioux City and the national security cutter USCGC Midgett.
The AN/UPX-29(V) interrogator is “a centralized air traffic control radar beacon system that uses a challenge-and-reply technique to identify friendly ships and aircraft” in a multi-target environment.
According to Navy officials, the FS-1290 VME chassis was chosen because “it is the only known assembly that provides the necessary shock and vibration isolation, electromagnetic interference protection and environmental effects protection for the AN/UPX-29A system, while also maintaining compatibility with the currently fielded systems.”
Acquired by Kontron in 2010, AP Labs is the original manufacturer of the FS-1290 VME chassis. Konton is currently the only company with access to proprietary data for the chassis.
