Bremen, Germany-based designer Dennis Siegel has developed a pocket-sized “electromagnetic harvester” he claims is capable of using the electromagnetic fields emitted by electrical devices to charge a battery.
According to Siegel’s website, the device uses coils and high frequency diodes to capture energy and is equipped with an LED light that indicates the strength of each electromagnetic field the device is drawing from.
Siegel used two types of harvesters to supposedly capture energy from different electromagnetic fields—a smaller harvester suitable for harvesting energy from frequencies below 100Hz and a larger harvester suitable for harvesting energy from radio broadcast frequencies, GSM, Bluetooth and WLAN.
Siegel reports that it takes about a day to charge a single AA battery, depending on the strength of the electromagnetic fields.
