A partnership between companies like Volkswagen researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology IWU in Chemnitz, Germany, have come up with a way to make holes in press-hardened steel bodywork using electromagnetic pulse technology. Dr. Verena Kräusel, head of department at the IWU said this method was previously used to expand or neck aluminum tubes.
