Question: Is it Possible to simulate radiated emissions?
Answer: I imagine that the next question would be – if they can be simulated well enough, then surely there is no need for emissions testing?
Well, it is now possible, with costly full-wave field-solver computer simulators, to predict radiated emissions well enough that emissions tests are almost guaranteed to be passed – but this is not quite the same thing as what I think the question above is asking.
What it is, is that modern field solvers can be used to guide design choices, so this still leaves a lot up to the EMC design competency of the designer who is benefitting from their computer simulations of radiated emissions.
However, the EMC computer simulation people keep improving what they do, so I don’t think the day can be far off when the only reason for emissions testing will be to prove build quality.
