British broadcaster BBC has accused China of blocking its English-language shortwave broadcasts of World Service radio programs.
Though the corporation admitted that it was not possible to determine the source of the jamming, it suggested that the “extensive and coordinated efforts are indicative of a well-resourced country such as China.”
According to the BBC, though the corporation has experienced several recent instances of satellite services being jammed, shortwave jamming is less frequent. The BBC has previously reported interference from China, including blocking of the broadcaster’s Chinese-language website and jamming of Chinese-language radio broadcasts.
China has since dismissed the accusations.
“I don’t understand this situation,” foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said at a daily press briefing when asked to comment on the allegations.
