Georgia Tech recently announced a two-and-a-half day, intensive short course that will provide comprehensive coverage of design practices for grounding and electromagnetic compatibility of industrial, commercial, and residential systems with linear and distorting loads. The course is geared toward electric power utility engineers, engineers engaged in the design and testing of … [Read more...]
Electric Utility Agrees to Relocate School Playground over Power Line Fears
The Fredon Board of Education in Fredon, N.J., approved a settlement with the local electric power utility under which the utility will rearrange property at the Fredon School to address health concerns about power lines that soar above the school's playground and fields. The settlement calls for the utility to pay up to $950,000 to move the fields to the front of the school. … [Read more...]
Mobile radiation stunts crop growth
On the heels of a study showing that electromagnetic radiation hazards could be threatening the honeybee population, new research out of India reveals that EM radiation emanating from mobile phones may also be stunting the growth of agricultural crops and plants. Studies carried out at Panjab University, Chandigarh, suggest that electromagnetic field (EMF) radiation from cell … [Read more...]
New Book Focuses on EMI Shielding
A new book published recently by an EMI materials engineer focuses on the role that EMI shielding plays in EMC (Electromagnetic Compliance) design and reviews EMI shielding with emphasis on materials and designs across many industry applications. “Advanced Materials and Design for Electromagnetic Interference Shielding,” written by Dr. Xingcun Colin Tong, PhD, of Laird … [Read more...]
RF & Hyper Features EMC-Dedicated Sessions
The RF & Hyper exhibition, organized by the Association Française de la Compatibilité ElectroMagnétique (AFCEM) will focus on the compatibility of radio systems embedded in transport; standards, simulation and hardware of the new EMC; human exposure and measures of strong fields; and the EMC of integrated circuits. This trade show dedicated to radiofrequencies, microwaves, … [Read more...]
New Material for Low-Frequency Magnetic Shielding
MuFerro™ 6800 from Holland Shielding Systems B.V. is a new material for shielding the low frequency magnetic fields found in transformer rooms, power plants, and bus-bar systems. Although most magnetic fields are typically in the 50- to 60-Hz range, MuFerro provides magnetic shielding in the frequency ranges from 10 Hz to 100 kHz. This material can provide a field-strength … [Read more...]
Espresso Engineering Presents: Brian Lawrence
Brian Lawrence, Executive Director of the International Association for Radio, Telecommunications and Electromagnetics (iNARTE) discusses the evolution of iNARTE, as well as its initiatives. LEARN MORE … [Read more...]
IEC Revises EMC Power Frequency Magnetic Field Immunity Test Standard
Replacing the first edition published in 1993 and its Amendment 1 published in 2000, the IEC recently released a revised version standard, IEC 61000-4-8:2009. This Electromagnetic Compatibility standard relates to the immunity requirements of equipment, only under operational conditions, to magnetic disturbances at power frequencies 50 Hz and 60 Hz related to residential and … [Read more...]
Spectrum Analyzer Detects Electronic Surveillance Devices
Research Electronics International recently introduced the new OSCOR Blue TSCM Spectrum Analyzer designed specifically for detecting and locating illicit electronic surveillance devices. With a fast sweep time (100 kHz to 24 GHz in less than one second at 12.2 kHz steps), the OSCOR Blue collects 2 million data points per second, providing detailed spectrum resolution throughout … [Read more...]
LED Driver Said to Reduce Cost of EMI Filter Components
A common EMI challenge in automotive applications is avoiding interference of an electronic circuit with the AM radio. Maxim Integrated Products says its new MAX16814 allows users to program the switching frequency from 200kHz to 2MHz, thus enabling operation above the AM radio band. In addition, its oscillator-synchronization feature minimizes EMI noise when multiple MAX16814s … [Read more...]
