The ALBA synchrotron facility near Barcelona, Spain, has commenced operations as a research tool to observe the magnetic characteristics of nanoparticles of interest for their superconductor properties. One such area of research will focus on ferrite nanoparticles and has the potential to improve electrical transmission systems.
Researchers are carrying out these experiments using X-ray spectroscopy, which will allow them to study the nanostructure of the multi-layers of a ceramic superconductor material. They intend to use the synchrotron light to then study the magnetic characteristics of nanoparticles of ferrite varieties and determine the impact they have on adhesive properties of the vortices.
