The state of Maryland is seeking money from the Federal Transit Administration’s New Starts program to help bring a proposed $1.517 billion light rail project to fruition, but concerns about EMI could bring the project to a halt. University of Maryland (UMD) physics professors are concerned that vibrations from the Purple Line, which would run through campus, might disrupt sensitive research. The transit authority has proposed active cancellation strategies, similar to systems currently being used successfully at institutions such as MIT, Cornell, and Northrop Grumman, but the physics department doesn’t appear entirely convinced that those solutions are enough for UMD.
