The U.S. Army has announced approval for the establishment of a new Electronic Warfare (EW) 29-Series career field for officers, warrant officers, and enlisted personnel. Eventually, the new career field will give the Army the largest electronic warfare manpower force of all the armed services. Nearly 1,600 EW personnel, serving at every level of command, will be added over the next three years. Officials are considering adding an additional 2,300 personnel to the career field in the near future as personnel become available. These new EW experts will not only be adept in fighting the threat of improvised explosive devices (see photo) but will also provide commanders and their staffs with strategies to use the EM spectrum to achieve tactical and operational advantage. Gen. Peter W. Giardelli, Army vice chief of staff noted, “America’s enemies are now using the EM spectrum against it and its soldiers.
