Researchers from Sandia National Laboratories have invented a self-guided bullet capable of hitting laser-equipped targets at distances of more than a mile away. The bullet is designed for use with small-caliber, smooth-bore weapons.
Guidance and control electronics within the bullet use data collected by sensors to control electromagnetic actuators and steer tiny fins on the outside of the bullet.
“We have a very promising technology to guide small projectiles that could be fully developed inexpensively and rapidly,” Red Jones, a researcher for Sandia National Laboratories, said.
