The New York Times reports Apollo 10 astronauts Thomas Stafford, John Young and Eugene Cernan did hear weird sounds during their lunar orbit in 1969, but the noise was likely the result of radio interference, not extraterrestrial musicians.
The strange sounds apparently emanated from interference between VHF systems on the lunar module and the command module orbiting the moon.
“It was probably just radio interference,” Cernan said. “Had we thought it was something other than that we would have briefed everyone after the flight. We never gave it another thought.”
In this case, it was thought to be audio rectification between the LM’s and command module’s VHF radios.
