Tektronix recently announced an improved model of their mixed domain oscilloscope (MDO), model MDO4000C. The unique feature of the MDO is the optional built-in 3 (or 6) GHz spectrum analyzer with the ability to time-sync to the measured voltage waveform. This “gated” spectral analysis feature is quite useful in tracking down intermittent EMI/EMC problems in systems.
There are four models ranging from 200 MHz to 1 GHz bandwidth and optional 3 or 6 GHz spectrum analyzers, so there’s a model for every budget. Base prices range from $7,300 for the basic 200 MHz four channel model, to $17,400 for the 1 GHz four channel version. The spectrum analyzer is optional, but will also display frequency versus time information. The models offer up to 20M memory per channel waveform storage and 2.5 to 5 GSa/s sample rate.
Another optional feature is a built-in arbitrary/function generator with 13 predefined waveform types and 50 MHz operation. Other optional features include a 16-channel logic analyzer, a protocol analyzer for serial bus support and measurements, and a digital voltmeter and frequency counter (which is free with product registration).
The MDO4000C makes EMI troubleshooting easy by quickly locating time-domain signals causing EMI in embedded systems. It would also be helpful in troubleshooting wireless systems with its ability to view the entire system (analog, digital, and RF) time-synchronized to understand its true behavior.
