Last month, the Navy ordered a new battery for its new electromagnetic rail gun as part of an $81 million dollar contract with K2 Energy Solution.
“The Electromagnetic Railgun uses magnetic fields created by electrical currents to launch projectiles more than 115 miles,” the Office of Naval Research said.
The U.S. Admiral praises the electromagnetic gun and laser due to its low costs and its ability to destroy a slow moving 5-meter vessel in ten seconds.
“The laser gun, known as a Laser Weapon System, or LaWS, is being tested aboard a warship in the Persian Gulf. It’s working pretty well. Lasers, I think, are a thing of the future,” Admiral Jonathan Greenert said.
According to the Office of Naval Research, the rail gun is scheduled to complete sea testing next year.
